YouTube Not Working on Your Phone Is Usually a Quick Fix
When YouTube will not load or play on your phone, the cause is almost always your connection, an old copy of the app, a data setting or full storage. Test the same video on Wi Fi and on cellular, then in a browser. That one test tells you where to look.
- Test one video on Wi Fi, then on cellular, then in your phone's browser. Where it fails tells you if the problem is the network, the app or the account.
- Google says 720p video needs a steady 2.5 Mbps and 4K needs 20 Mbps. Lower the quality when the connection is slow.
- On iPhone, YouTube can be blocked from cellular data. Check Settings, then Cellular, and find YouTube in the app list.
- Update the app. The iPhone version now asks for iOS 17, so an older phone may lose the app.
- On Android, clear the YouTube cache in Settings, then Apps. Clear cache keeps your sign in. Clear storage wipes the app data.
- Google lists ad blockers and changed DNS settings as causes of the error that says something went wrong.

YouTube itself is rarely broken. The problem is almost always in one of four places. Your connection, the app, a data setting or your phone's storage. One quick test points you to the right one.
The Three Place Test
Pick one video. Try it in three places, in this order.
- On Wi Fi in the YouTube app.
- On cellular data in the YouTube app. Turn Wi Fi off for this one.
- In your phone's web browser at youtube.com.
Now read the results.
- Fails on Wi Fi, works on cellular. Your Wi Fi is the problem. Restart the router and read the guide on slow home Wi Fi.
- Works on Wi Fi, fails on cellular. A data setting is blocking YouTube. Jump to the section on data settings.
- Fails in the app, works in the browser. The app is the problem. Update it, then clear it out.
- Fails everywhere, on every network. Try a second phone or a computer. If YouTube fails there too, the trouble is on YouTube's side or your account. Sign out and back in, and give it some time.
Check the Speed It Needs
Video uses far more data than a web page. A connection that loads Instagram fine can still choke on video.
Google lists the steady speed each quality needs.
- 4K. 20 Mbps.
- HD 1080p. 5 Mbps.
- HD 720p. 2.5 Mbps.
- SD 480p. 1.1 Mbps.
- SD 360p. 0.7 Mbps.
Run a free speed test on your phone. If you get 3 Mbps, 1080p will buffer and 720p should play. Tap the gear in the player and pick a lower quality. Google also says many devices on one network can lower your speed, so a busy home at night is slower than the same home at noon.
Fix the App Itself
Most app problems clear up with these steps, in this order. Try the video again after each one.
Close It and Restart the Phone
On an iPhone with Face ID, Apple says to swipe up from the bottom and pause, find YouTube, then swipe up on it to close it. On an iPhone with a Home button, double click the Home button first. On Android, open your recent apps and swipe YouTube away.
If the video still fails, restart the phone. Google lists both steps.
Update the App
An old copy of the app is a common cause. Open the App Store or Google Play, search for YouTube and tap Update if you see it. Google also says to update your phone's own system software.
Older iPhones are where this bites. The YouTube listing in Apple's App Store asks for iOS 17. A phone stuck on an older version cannot get new app updates. Use youtube.com in Safari on that phone instead.
Clear It Out
On Android, Google's steps work for YouTube.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then See all apps.
- Tap YouTube.
- Tap Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Clear cache deletes temporary files and keeps your sign in. Clear storage permanently deletes all of the app's data, so you will sign in again. Start with the cache. Menu names vary a bit by phone maker.
On iPhone there is no cache button for YouTube. Delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store. The guide on clearing the cache on an iPhone covers what each method removes.
Free Up Space
If your storage is nearly full, free some up. On iPhone, look under Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage. On Android, look under Settings, then Storage. Delete old videos or apps you do not use, then try again.
Check Your Data Settings
This is the fix when YouTube works on Wi Fi and fails on cellular.
iPhone
Apple lets you turn cellular data off for one app at a time. Apple's guide says to scroll down to the list of apps and services on the Cellular settings screen and turn the app on. When cellular data is off for an app, Apple says the iPhone uses only Wi Fi for it.
Go to Settings, then Cellular. Scroll to YouTube and make sure it is on.
Then check Low Data Mode. Apple says it lowers streaming quality and stops apps from using data in the background. On cellular, find it under Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data Options.
Android
Google says to make sure data usage is turned on for YouTube in your phone's settings. Open Settings, then Apps, tap YouTube, and look for mobile data or data usage. Make sure it is allowed. Menu names vary by phone maker.
Error Messages and What They Mean
Google lists the common errors. Each one points to a likely cause, based on the steps Google gives.
- Playback error. Tap to retry. Usually the connection. Run the speed test and lower the quality.
- Connection to server lost. The network dropped. Switch between Wi Fi and cellular.
- Something went wrong. Refresh or try again later. Google says to refresh, sign in, update the app, allow ads or turn off ad blockers, and check that a third party app has not changed your DNS servers. Then restart the phone.
- This video is unavailable. Often the video, not your phone. Some videos are age restricted, and Google says signed out users may be blocked from some content. Sign in and try again.
If the video plays but there is no sound, check the phone volume and the volume inside the player. Google lists those two first.
Advice to Ignore
"Factory reset your phone." Some lists put it near the top. It erases everything to fix a single app. The steps above fix nearly every case without it.
"Clear storage first." Clear storage wipes the app's data and your sign in. Clear cache does the job most of the time. Save the big step for last.
"Install a booster or cleaner app." Google's own fix list does not include one. Every step above uses the settings already on your phone.
"Use a VPN to make YouTube work." A VPN adds one more network between you and YouTube. Turn it off while you test, so you know which network is failing.
If your whole phone feels slow, not just YouTube, the guide on why a phone is so slow covers the next fixes.
From the Inbox
- Why is YouTube not loading on my phone but other apps work?
- Other apps use less data, so a weak connection shows up first on video. Run a speed test and compare it with the speed Google lists for the video quality. If the speed is fine, close and reopen YouTube, update it, then clear its cache on Android or delete and reinstall it on iPhone.
- Why does YouTube say something went wrong on my phone?
- Google lists a few causes for that message. Refresh and sign in again, update the app, turn off any ad blocker, check that a third party app has not changed your DNS settings, then restart the phone and play the video again.
- Why is YouTube working on Wi Fi but not on data?
- Check that cellular data is on for YouTube. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular, and scroll to YouTube in the app list. Apple says an app with cellular data off uses only Wi Fi. On Android, check the mobile data setting for YouTube under Settings, then Apps. Low Data Mode on iPhone also lowers streaming quality.
- Why does YouTube keep buffering on my phone?
- Your connection is slower than the video quality needs. Google says HD 1080p needs a steady 5 Mbps. Lower the quality in the player, move closer to the router, or switch from Wi Fi to cellular to see which is faster.
- How do I clear the YouTube cache on my phone?
- On Android, open Settings, tap Apps, tap See all apps, tap YouTube, tap Storage and cache, then tap Clear cache. On iPhone there is no cache button for YouTube. Delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store. You will need to sign in again.
- Why is YouTube not working on my old phone?
- The app may no longer support your system. The YouTube listing in Apple's App Store now asks for iOS 17. Update the phone if you can. If the phone cannot update, open youtube.com in the browser instead.
