Deleting Instagram Takes 30 Days. Export Your Photos First
To delete Instagram for good, go to your profile, tap the menu, open Accounts Center, find Deactivation or deletion, pick the account and choose Delete account. Instagram hides the profile at once and erases it after a 30 day window. Export your photos and messages before you start, because the export tool goes away with the account.
- The path is Profile, then the menu, then Accounts Center, then Deactivation or deletion, then Delete account.
- Export your photos and messages first. Instagram says you lose the export tool once the account is deleted.
- An export can take up to 30 days to arrive, and the download link lasts 4 days. Start it early.
- Instagram keeps the account hidden for 30 days. Log back in during that window to cancel.
- Instagram cannot delete an account for you. If you forgot the password, reset it first.
- Deleting the app from your phone does not delete the account.

Make us a preferred sourceYou have had enough of the feed. Maybe it eats your evenings. Maybe you just want your photos off a stranger's server. You open the app to delete it, and the button is nowhere in sight.
The button lives in Accounts Center, a few taps deep. The delete takes a minute. The steps before it matter more. Once the account is gone, so is your one way to get a copy of what you posted.
Take a Break or Leave for Good
Instagram gives you two choices. They are not the same.
- Deactivate. Your profile, photos, comments and likes are hidden. Log back in and it all comes back. Instagram says you can only do this once a week.
- Delete. Your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are removed for good after a 30 day window. Instagram's delete page says you cannot get them back after that.
If you only want quiet for a while, deactivate. If you never want to come back, read on and export first.
Export Your Photos and Messages First
Instagram's export page walks through the copy. On a phone or a computer, the steps are close.
- Tap More at the bottom left, or the menu on your profile, then Settings.
- Open Meta Account or Accounts Center, whichever you see. Then tap Your information and permissions.
- Tap Export your information, then Create export.
- Pick the profile, then tap Next.
- Choose Export to device.
- Pick what to include, the date range, the format, the email for the alert and the media quality.
- Tap Start export.
Two numbers decide when you can delete. Instagram says the export link can take up to 30 days to reach your email. Once it is ready, you have 4 days to download it from Available downloads. So start the export, wait for the file, save it, and only then delete.
Pick high media quality if your photos matter to you. Instagram notes that high quality video makes the file bigger, so check your free space before you download. Security.org says the file comes as HTML, which opens in a browser, or JSON, which is for apps. Pick HTML unless you plan to move the data into another service.
Three More Things to Check
Threads. If you post on Threads with this account, decide about Threads first. Meta has changed how the two are tied. In late 2023, MacRumors reported that Threads gained its own delete option. In the Threads app, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Account, then Delete or Deactivate Profile.
Apps you log into with Instagram. Some games and websites let you sign in with Instagram. ESET warns that those logins can break once the account is gone. Switch each one to an email and password first.
Paid extras. ESET also says to cancel any subscription tied to the account before you delete. Check what you pay for through the account, and cancel it while you can still log in.
Delete Your Instagram Account Step by Step
Instagram's steps depend on which layout your app shows. Both end in the same place.
If your Accounts Center shows Manage accounts:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap the Menu button at the top right.
- Tap Accounts Center, then Profiles and personal details.
- Tap Manage next to the account.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion, then pick the account.
- Tap Delete account, then Continue.
If it shows Accounts instead:
- Open Accounts Center.
- Tap Personal details, then Account ownership and control.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion.
- Pick the account, then Delete account.
- Tap Continue and follow the prompts. Instagram asks for your password to confirm.
On a computer, sign in at instagram.com. Click More at the bottom left, then Settings. The rest is the same.
Instagram also says some accounts are moving to Meta Account settings. If you see Meta Account where Accounts Center should be, start there. The words are close and the path is the same.
What Happens in the Next 30 Days
The delete does not finish the moment you tap it. Instagram says it works like this.
- Right away. Your profile is hidden from other people.
- During the window. You can cancel. ESET says logging back in is how you do it. Instagram says the number of days can differ by region.
- When the window ends. Your profile and everything on it are deleted. You cannot recover them.
- Up to 90 days. That is how long Instagram says full removal can take. Copies can stay in disaster recovery backups after that.
- Some data stays longer. Instagram may keep some information for legal reasons, for terms violations or to prevent harm.
Do not log in on a whim during those 30 days. A login is how you cancel. Sign out of Instagram on every phone, tablet and computer first, so you do not open it out of habit.
When You Cannot Log In
Instagram's delete page is plain about this. Instagram cannot delete a profile for you. You have to be able to log in.
- Forgot the password? ESET says to reset it with Forgot password on the login screen, then come back and delete.
- Forgot the username? Instagram's delete page links to its login help for this. Start there.
- Account hacked? Get it back first. Then export what is left, and delete.
If the account was removed for breaking Instagram's rules, Instagram says you may not be able to sign up again with the same username.
Advice to Ignore
"Just delete the app." That only takes the app off your phone. Your profile stays up, and people can still find it.
"Delete first, download later." Instagram says you lose the export tool when the account is deleted. Save your copy before you tap delete.
"Deactivate it and it will vanish." Deactivation only hides the account. Everything is still there, and it comes back the next time you log in.
"It is gone the second you confirm." You get a 30 day window, and full removal can take up to 90 days.
If you are leaving more than one app behind, the guide to deleting a Facebook account covers what to save there too. If the account is staying, lock it down with two factor authentication and a strong password.
