Phone Not Ringing? Check These Settings Before Anything Else
A phone that stops ringing is almost never broken. A silent switch, a Focus or mode, an unknown caller filter or a Bluetooth device is usually swallowing the call. Look at your call log first. It tells you which kind of problem you have in about a minute.
- Open your call log first. A missed call on the list means the call arrived quietly. No call on the list means it never reached the phone.
- Apple says Silent mode stops ringing but the iPhone may still vibrate. Check the switch, the Action button or Sounds and Haptics.
- A Focus or mode like Do Not Disturb, Sleep or Bedtime silences calls on both iPhone and Android.
- Unknown caller filters send new numbers to voicemail without a ring. On iPhone, set Screen Unknown Callers to Never.
- Turn Bluetooth off for one test call. Earbuds, a watch or a car can take the ring away from the phone.
- Blocked numbers and Call Forwarding stop the ring before it starts. Samsung and Apple both list them.

The phone is almost never broken. A setting is swallowing the ring. The trick is to find which one, and your call log points straight at it.
Start With the Call Log
Open the Phone app and look at your recent calls. This one check splits the problem in two.
- The call shows as missed. The call reached your phone. It just arrived quietly. That points to sound settings, a Focus or mode, a filter or a Bluetooth device. Start with the next section.
- The call is not in the log at all. The call never reached the phone. That points to call forwarding, a blocked number, your signal or your carrier. Skip to the section on calls that never arrive.
- The call went to voicemail. Check the unknown caller filters first. Then check forwarding and blocked numbers.
Now make a test call. Ask a friend to call you, or call yourself from another phone. Keep the phone face up in front of you. Watch the screen and listen. Run this same test after every change, so you know which setting fixed it.
When the Call Arrives Quietly
These are the settings that silence a call that did reach you. Check them in this order.
Silent Mode and the Ring Volume
On an iPhone, Apple says Silent mode stops the ring and alerts, but the phone may still vibrate. That is why many people miss it.
- iPhone with a Ring and Silent switch. Flip the switch toward the front of the phone to turn Silent mode off.
- iPhone with an Action button. Press and hold the Action button. If your button does something else, go to Settings, then Sounds and Haptics, and turn Silent mode off.
On a Pixel, Google says to press a volume button and tap More. Then drag the Ring and notification volume slider up. Tap the ring icon above the slider to switch between ring, vibrate and mute.
On a Galaxy, Samsung says to close apps and stop any music first. Playing media or connected headphones keep the ring volume from going up. Samsung also hides a switch called Mute all sounds in Settings, then Accessibility, then Hearing enhancements. Turn it off.
A Focus or a Mode
A Focus or mode can silence calls all day while you forget it is on.
- iPhone. Apple says to swipe down from the top right corner to open Control Center. If a Focus like Do Not Disturb, Sleep or Work is lit up, tap it to turn it off.
- Pixel. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Modes. Make sure Do Not Disturb is off. Then open Settings, then Modes, and check each one.
- Galaxy. Samsung says to go to Settings, then Modes and Routines. Turn off any mode that silences ringtones, such as Sleep or Relax. Then touch and hold the Do not Disturb icon in Quick settings.
A schedule is the usual trap. A Sleep mode set for 10 at night can still be on when a call comes at 7 in the morning. Look at the times, not just the switch.
Unknown Caller Filters
New callers are often the ones who matter most. A doctor's office, a delivery driver, a new client. Filters treat them as strangers.
On an iPhone, Apple says to go to Settings, then Apps, then Phone. Set Screen Unknown Callers to Never, so unknown callers ring and are not silenced. Under Call Filtering, turn off Unknown Callers. Older versions of iOS call the setting Silence Unknown Callers. Apple says that when it is on, a caller has to be in your Contacts or Recents to get through.
The simple fix for one caller is to save the number in your contacts. Apple suggests this too.
Bluetooth Is Taking the Ring
This one fools people all the time. Your earbuds sit in a case in your bag. Your car is parked outside. Your watch is on the dresser. One of them is still connected, and the call goes there.
Turn Bluetooth off and make a test call. If the phone rings now, a Bluetooth device was the problem. Turn Bluetooth back on and remove devices you no longer use.
On an iPhone, check one more place. Apple's guide shows a setting at Settings, then Accessibility, then Touch, then Call Audio Routing. It picks where call audio goes, like a Bluetooth headset or the speaker. The same screen holds Auto-Answer Calls. If that is on, the phone answers by itself after a set time.
Pixel Gestures That Silence Calls
Google lists two Pixel gestures that silence calls on purpose.
- Flip to Shhh. Google says a Pixel 4a or later can silence calls when it lies face down. Go to Settings, then System, then Gestures, then Flip to Shhh. Turn it off, or keep the phone face up.
- Active Edge. On a Pixel 2 to 4, squeezing the phone can silence a call. Go to Settings, then System, then Gestures, then Active Edge. Turn off Squeeze to silence phone.
Google also says to make sure All Phone notifications is on. Go to Settings, then Apps, then All apps, then Phone.
When the Call Never Arrives
No missed call in the log means the call was stopped before it reached you. These are the usual causes.
- Call forwarding. Apple says to go to Settings, then Apps, then Phone, then Call Forwarding, and make sure it is off. Samsung says a phone will not ring when call forwarding is on.
- Blocked numbers. On an iPhone, open Blocked Contacts in the same Phone settings. To unblock a number, swipe left and tap Unblock. On a Pixel, open the Phone app, tap More, then Settings, then Blocked numbers.
- Airplane mode. Apple says to turn Airplane mode on, wait five seconds, then turn it off. Samsung lists Airplane mode as a cause too. Check that the icon is not lit.
- Software and carrier settings. Apple says to check for a carrier settings update and an iOS update. On a Pixel or Galaxy, check for a system update.
- Network settings. Apple suggests a reset of network settings at Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Reset. It erases saved Wi Fi passwords and VPN settings, so keep it near the end of the list.
- The carrier. Apple says to ask your carrier about outages in your area, billing blocks and errors on its side. If your phone shows No Service or SOS, read the guide on why a phone is stuck on SOS.
Advice to Ignore
"Reset your phone to factory settings." It is on most lists, and it wipes everything. Samsung lists a factory reset as a last step, after a backup. Nearly every case above is fixed with a switch.
"Turn off all your spam protection." Filters are not the enemy. Spam calls are a real problem. Set the filter so unknown callers still ring, or save the numbers you need. The guide on how to stop spam calls shows how to keep the junk out without missing the calls that matter.
"Your speaker is broken." Play a song or a video. If you hear it clearly, the speaker works. A ring problem with a good speaker is a setting, almost every time.
Still Not Ringing?
If you checked every setting and the test call still makes no sound, try these last steps.
- Restart the phone. Samsung lists a restart. It clears a stuck sound or call service.
- Try another ringtone. Samsung says only downloaded song files work as ringtones, not streamed songs. Pick one of the phone's built in tones to test.
- Check one contact. A single caller with no ring may have their own ringtone. Samsung says each contact can carry a custom tone. Open that contact and look.
- Get it checked. If a song plays fine but calls never ring after all of this, contact Apple, Google, Samsung or your carrier. Ask them to test both the phone and the line.
If the phone also feels slow or buggy, the guide on why a phone is so slow covers the next fixes.
From the Inbox
- Why is my phone not ringing when someone calls me?
- The most common causes are Silent mode, a Focus or Do Not Disturb, a low ring volume, an unknown caller filter and a Bluetooth device that takes the audio. Check your call log. If the call shows as missed, a setting silenced it. If the call is not there at all, look at call forwarding, blocked numbers, your signal and your carrier.
- Why do I get missed calls but my phone does not ring?
- A missed call in the log proves the call reached the phone. So the problem is sound, not signal. Check Silent mode, ring volume, every Focus or mode, and any earbuds or watch still connected. On a Pixel, Flip to Shhh silences calls when the phone lies face down.
- Why do calls go straight to voicemail without ringing?
- Apple lists Focus settings, Screen Unknown Callers, Call Filtering and blocked contacts for this exact problem. Call forwarding sends calls away too. If none of those are on, a weak signal or a carrier issue can be the cause. Ask your carrier about outages and account blocks.
- Why is my iPhone not ringing but it vibrates?
- That is Silent mode. Apple says that when Silent mode is on, the iPhone does not ring but may still vibrate. Flip the Ring and Silent switch toward the front, or press and hold the Action button on newer models. You can also go to Settings, then Sounds and Haptics.
- Why is my Samsung phone not ringing?
- Samsung lists Mute all sounds, Airplane mode, silencing modes like Sleep or Relax, and Do not disturb. Mute all sounds hides in Settings, then Accessibility, then Hearing enhancements. Samsung also says playing media or connected headphones can stop the ring volume from rising.
- Can a bad SIM card stop my phone from ringing?
- It can stop calls from reaching the phone at all. Then you see no missed call in the log. Turn Airplane mode on and off, restart the phone, and check for a carrier settings update. If the problem stays, ask your carrier to test the line and the SIM.
