How to Block Someone on TikTok and the Three Gaps It Leaves

To block someone on TikTok, open their profile, tap the Share button at the top, tap Block, then tap Block again. They are not told. You both lose sight of each other's posts, profiles and direct messages. TikTok says you may still see them in multi-host LIVE, Duets other people post and group chats you share, so pair the block with the right comment and message settings.

  1. Open the profile, tap the Share button at the top, tap Block, then tap Block again to confirm.
  2. TikTok does not tell the person you blocked them, and it removes any follow between you.
  3. A block hides posts, profiles and direct messages both ways. You may still see each other in multi-host LIVE, other people's Duets and shared group chats.
  4. To block a pile of commenters at once, press and hold a comment on your own post and pick Manage multiple comments.
  5. Your blocked list lives in Settings and privacy, then Privacy, then Blocked accounts.
  6. Screenshot threats or harassment before you block. StopBullying.gov says to keep the evidence and report it.

You are scrolling your comments and the same account is back again. Another rude remark. Maybe a stranger keeps sliding into your messages. You want them gone, and you do not want them to know you did it.

A TikTok block takes three taps once you are on their profile. They get no alert. A block does not wall them off everywhere, though, so a few settings finish the job.

Block Someone From the App

TikTok's own steps work the same on iPhone and Android.

  • Go to the person's profile. Tap their name on a video or comment, or search for their username.
  • Tap the Share button at the top of the profile. It looks like an arrow.
  • Tap Block at the bottom.
  • Tap Block again to confirm.

You do not need to follow someone to block them, and they do not need to follow you. Any account with a profile can be blocked.

Block Someone on a Computer

TikTok's help page lists the app steps only. On the TikTok website, the steps are close. Avira's guide gives the path.

  • Open tiktok.com and sign in.
  • Search for the user and open their profile.
  • Click the three dots next to the share arrow, under their name.
  • Click Block, then confirm.

Block a Pile of Commenters at Once

When a video gets a wave of trolls, one by one is too slow. TikTok lets you block many accounts straight from the comments on your own post.

  • Open one of your posts and tap the Comments button.
  • Press and hold a comment, then tap Manage multiple comments. You can also tap the Filters button at the top.
  • Select the comments from the accounts you want to block.
  • Tap More at the bottom.
  • Tap Block accounts, then tap Block to confirm.

This works only on comments under your own posts. Avira puts the limit at 100 accounts at a time.

What a Block Does

TikTok says a block works both ways.

  • You cannot see each other's posts.
  • You cannot find each other's profiles in search.
  • You cannot send each other direct messages.
  • Any connection between you, like a follow, is removed.
  • The other person is not notified.

The direct messages help page adds one more detail. A blocked account cannot send you a message request.

The Three Gaps a Block Leaves

TikTok's blocking page is clear about where a block stops. You may still see the person in three places.

  • Multi-host LIVE. If you both join a LIVE with several hosts, you may still see each other.
  • Duets posted by others. If a third account makes a Duet with the person's video, you may still see them in it.
  • Shared group chats. If you are both in the same group chat, you may still see each other there.

Close what you can with these settings.

Leave the shared group chat. If the person is in a group with you, the block will not pull you out. Leave the group yourself, or ask the person who runs it to remove them.

Lock down who can message you. Go to Profile, then the menu, then Settings and privacy, then Privacy. Choose who can send you direct messages. The DM help page warns that even the Don't receive setting keeps old chats open. Only a block cuts off an existing chat.

Mute voice calls. TikTok has voice calls inside DMs. In the chat, tap the More options button and turn on Mute calls. TikTok says a muted caller no longer rings your phone.

Make your account private. In the same Privacy menu, turn on Private account. Avira notes that you then approve who can follow you.

Stop the Comment Pile On Before It Starts

A block deals with one person. Comment filters deal with the next ten. The TikTok comments page lists these, all under Settings and privacy, then Privacy, then Comments.

  • Allow comments from. Pick Everyone, Followers or Friends. Friends means followers you follow back.
  • Filter keywords in comments. Add words or names. Comments that use them stay hidden unless you approve them.
  • Filter unwanted comments. Hides comments that may be spam or offensive until you approve them.
  • Creator Care Mode. Hides offensive comments, plus ones that were reported, deleted or disliked before.
  • Filter all comments. Holds every comment for your OK. TikTok says this one is not available to everyone yet.

Hidden comments wait under Review filtered comments, where you can approve or delete each one.

Find or Undo a Block

TikTok's blocked list lives in your settings.

  • Tap Profile at the bottom.
  • Tap the Menu button at the top, then Settings and privacy.
  • Tap Privacy.
  • Tap Blocked accounts. You may need to scroll down.

To unblock, tap Unblock next to the name. Or go to the person's profile, tap the Share button and tap Unblock.

For parents. TikTok says a parent or guardian can view all of a teen's blocked accounts through Family Pairing. TikTok also says direct messages are open only to accounts 16 and older. Message requests are off by default for users under 18.

Save the Proof Before You Block

If someone threatens you or will not stop, take screenshots first. StopBullying.gov says to keep evidence with dates and times, and then block the person. It also says not to reply.

Report the account to TikTok too. A block protects you. A report lets TikTok act on the account for everyone.

StopBullying.gov says some acts are crimes and belong with the police. Those include threats of violence, stalking and sexual photos sent to a minor. Tell the school when the person is a classmate.

If you are leaving more than one app behind, the guide on deleting a Facebook account shows what to save first. If an account you blocked seems to know too much, read the guide on how to tell if your phone is hacked.

Advice to Ignore

"Just filter their comments instead." A filter hides comments. It does not stop direct messages or profile views. When you want someone gone, block.

"They will get a notice that you blocked them." TikTok says they are not notified.

"Block them before you save anything." Take your screenshots first. Once they are blocked, their profile and posts are hidden from you too.

"Turn off comments for good." That punishes every fan for one troll. Keyword filters and Friends only comments do the job and keep the conversation going.
