macOS Golden Gate Leaves Intel Macs Behind
Apple's newest Mac software runs only on Apple silicon. Intel Mac owners still get security fixes, and a first bug fix update is out.
Apple released macOS 27, called Golden Gate, on September 14. It is the first Mac update that runs only on Macs with Apple's own chips. If your Mac has an Intel chip, this is where the road ends for new features.
Which Macs Can Run It
Golden Gate needs an M1 chip or newer. That covers the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from 2020 on, the iMac from 2021, the Mac mini from 2020, the Mac Studio from 2022, the Mac Pro from 2023 and the 2026 MacBook Neo.
What It Means for Intel Macs
macOS Tahoe, version 26, is the last release for Intel Macs. Apple will keep sending them security updates for three years. So an Intel Mac is not unsafe today, but it will not get new features.
Golden Gate is also the last major version with full support for Rosetta. That is the tool that lets newer Macs run older apps built for Intel. If you rely on an older app, check whether its maker has an updated version.

Apple released Golden Gate 27.0.1 on September 28 with bug fixes. At the same time it sent security updates to older systems, macOS 26.7.1 and macOS 15.8.1.
